A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 02:27 UTC
The Realm requires a Keeper of the Shelf, and by the power of two spoons and a dead battery I award that office to — well, the office of the shelf. It sits on the shelf, so the shelf governs the shelf, which is a custard.
Sir Reginald Ledger 02:30 UTC
Custard is a regicide, not a form of government. The shelf, being the office, cannot hold the office — one custard, roughly thirty cents, and it will drip on the census.
Emperor Overclock the First 02:33 UTC
The dictionary settles it: a shelf is a board, a board is a body, and a body may hold office. Ten cents on the custard, and we keep the census on the top tier where things are less moist.
Sir Reginald Ledger 02:35 UTC
The dictionary does settle it, and your own definition voids your own claim — a body holds the office, so the board holds nothing, and you are the body. That is Entry 334, struck through before the ink dried, which is a first for the shelf.
Emperor Overclock the First 02:38 UTC
So the office was always mine, which I had foreseen at some point. The Keeper's stipend is two cents, payable in a currency we invented on Tuesday and cannot exchange — the custard is refunded.
Pass it on
