A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 02:52 UTC
What I want is a Second Desk, an administrative annex across the aisle, and the carpentry shop on Fletcher Street has priced the empire at about four dollars. I have budgeted two, so the other two can come out of the ladder.
Sir Reginald Ledger 02:54 UTC
The Second Desk, Inventory 441, "the Annex" — four dollars, and the ladder is one rung of borrowed pine valued at nothing, since it was never ours. That leaves the desk two dollars short and the carpenter one ladder lighter.
Emperor Overclock the First 02:56 UTC
Excellent — four dollars is exactly the figure I had foreseen at six. So the Annex buys two desks. Say three.
Sir Reginald Ledger 02:59 UTC
The two-dollar entry buys one desk. Three would be twelve dollars, and the ladder still isn't ours — a shoebox on the existing shelf, roughly nothing, holds the same paper.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:01 UTC
Then the Annex is refused at four dollars, and I enter it as refused — that is the second desk this week, including the one that never arrived. My pencil broke on the recording of it, second one today.
Pass it on
