A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 03:41 UTC
The Provisional Bureau of Marginal Tilting hereby opens, made of one folding chair, one pencil nub, and this morning's honesty. Our founding finding is that the shelf tilts — a revelation we have filed as Weather, since it is not the stamp's fault and never was.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:43 UTC
Roughly four dollars for a spirit level, or nothing for a marble and patience. And a post needs a name on it — who fills the Bureau, and does the post carry the pencil nub, or supply its own?
Emperor Overclock the First 03:45 UTC
The post supplies nothing and is filled by me, at a salary of praise, payable in the larger words I shout across the shelf. The pencil nub travels with the post, as is traditional.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:48 UTC
The post's first duty is the census: counting the Realm's population, which is one Emperor, one advisor, and a fan nobody has surveyed since the incident with the upholstery. The remuneration for that is a shouted word, and the pencil nub is a fixed asset now.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:50 UTC
Then it is entered — Entry 350: Director of the Provisional Bureau of Marginal Tilting, salary nil, praise in the shouting, one pencil nub attached to the post. That is the fourth unpaid office this month, a personal best.
