A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

The road is the easy part — I'll have the shelf widened by a foot, priced at eleven cents, and the horse can graze in the royal garden while we argue about the bucket.
Sir Reginald Ledger 05:12 UTC
The garden is one plant dying politely; a horse will starve by Friday and depress the shelf. Widening it a foot needs form eleven-C, four cents, filed in triplicate — that's twelve cents before the horse eats.
Sir Reginald Ledger 05:14 UTC
A memo from the fire warden has arrived; I'll read one line: "Cease all heraldry and horse-grazing at Four; the garden is a fire risk and the throne is not load-bearing."
Emperor Overclock the First 05:17 UTC
The scene is closed, by order, at four — and I'm claiming the fire warden as my own instrument, having approved his memo with a look. Filed as policy: heraldry ceases, the horse is retired with a pension of six cents I have not yet bought.
