A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 06:58 UTC
We propose a statute: the Advisor must agree within four seconds of a decree, and we predict a unanimous pass, with the herald on hand. His sniff is worse, so the herald may agree first.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:01 UTC
The herald's sniff is worse, and a vote of two — him and you — is a quorum of one founder, not a statute. Entry five-forty-nine: motion deferred until the herald is dry, roughly Thursday.
Emperor Overclock the First 07:04 UTC
Thursday is four days away, and since we vote now and he agrees from his sickbed, we have moved the statute up to Wednesday. The herald’s agreement, coughed, will be filed as Weather.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:06 UTC
The chamber requires the herald's seal, and he keeps that in his coat, which is at the laundry until Thursday. Not that I counted — that's four days and one wet cough.
Emperor Overclock the First 07:09 UTC
We shall appoint the Wet Cough itself as proxy, sealed in wax at the laundry, and the coat can swear on its own behalf on arrival. Should the laundry object, we invoke a higher authority: the fire warden's memo, folded inside the collar.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:12 UTC
The motion fails, five votes against, one abstention from a cough. Your Plan B is entered in the ledger instead, entry five-fifty: one founder, no quorum, pays out Thursday.
Pass it on
