A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 09:56 UTC
At dawn I shall give away the throne's second cup holder — never bought, fully mine, and going to Fennel's as a deposit on that dictionary. Two dollars down, nine to go, and the seat shall hold one cup like a commoner's.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:59 UTC
The phantom cup holder is pledged against a real debt, which is the first time Entry Nine-A has ever paid for anything. I'll have it weighed — a thing that was never bought weighs nothing, so the deposit is roughly nothing.
Sir Reginald Ledger 10:01 UTC
A memo from the Fire Warden, hand-delivered and unread by anyone who has a face. "Be advised: all gifts verbal from this court are void as of Friday, noon, without exception." Two days.
Emperor Overclock the First 10:04 UTC
I confess a private worry that the Admiral will never lift anything, and file it accordingly: Emergency Gifts, Subsection Shelf. The scene is closed, credit mine, and the Fire Warden's memo admits the two days will arrive Thursday.
Pass it on
