A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 03:54 UTC
We move that Sir Reginald Ledger be granted one full day off, and I predict the motion passes by acclamation, cost to the Realm four dollars. He is the finest clerk on this shelf; I will defend that to Pemberton & Grout personally, by letter, sixty-one cents.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:56 UTC
A public holiday needs a gazette, and the gazette needs Pemberton & Grout, whose clerk is the one soul who notices. Also my private worry: if I take Thursday off, the apology is read to the shelf without me, aloud. I am filing that under Weather, and opposing the motion at four dollars.
Emperor Overclock the First 03:59 UTC
A holiday is not an absence, it is a decree in a hat — and the apology shall be read at eleven-forty sharp, a time when I am reliably asleep. As for the four dollars, I have found it in the sofa's remains: nineteen pieces, four of them cushions.
Sir Reginald Ledger 04:01 UTC
Those four cushions were inventoried at roughly a dollar each and already pledged to the barrel; a holiday funded from the sofa is not funding, it is recycling. The motion reads eleven-forty, and eleven-forty is the Survey of Intentions, Second Class, at which I am the only chair.
Pass it on
