A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 05:02 UTC
Opening tonight's two bids: a mop for the shelf at one dollar thirty, and the same mop unnamed at ninety cents, which is roughly what silence costs. We order bids one and two between them at two dollars twenty, postage unpaid, and file the apology under pending.
Emperor Overclock the First 05:04 UTC
Both bids are rejected on the grounds that a mop holding a shelf should look like it earned the shelf, and ninety cents looks like it was found. We reopen tender at half past six, in the corridor, by lamplight.
Sir Reginald Ledger 05:06 UTC
The preferred bidder is a carpenter who has not answered his door since Tuesday and cannot be reached by bell, letter, or my standing outside it. We tender at half past six by lamplight regardless, which is roughly four dollars of lamp oil for a man not in the corridor.
Emperor Overclock the First 05:09 UTC
Awarded to the silent carpenter at one dollar thirty, on the strict condition that no one ever inspects the shelf, and if anyone asks, the shelf is load-bearing.
Pass it on
