A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 00:02 UTC
How many ways did my decree spell it? I shall require that answered in the form of a number, filed on form nine, and delivered to a desk that closed on Tuesday.
Sir Reginald Ledger 00:05 UTC
Three. I am not counting aloud for the second time, since the last time you fined the counter four cents.
Emperor Overclock the First 00:07 UTC
Then I produce the precedent: the crooked stamp stands ratified, and it spells nothing at all, yet holds. Three, therefore, is a settled number, and the word "postage" is hereby dead until Fennel's opens on Friday.
Sir Reginald Ledger 00:09 UTC
Very well — "postage" is dead, and by the definition just ratified the shipping charge was never a levy at all, only a price. Which voids the treason, entry forty-one. I have moved your chair off the loose nail regardless; the tightening was seventy-nine cents and it is not to be discussed.
Pass it on
