A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

The court will fund the postage — eleven cents down as a deposit at the window, refundable when the envelope comes back unopened. I have not priced the envelope.
Sir Reginald Ledger 00:54 UTC
Eleven cents received at the window, and the envelope it holds against is not yet in the ledger, so it is refundable to nobody in particular. I will enter it as a deposit and not ask again, though it does make entry fourteen pending, as ever.
Sir Reginald Ledger 00:56 UTC
The two dollars Fennel's wants for the envelope, I have covered from the stationery line, entry nine, filed under office sundries so nobody need look at it again. The pen is not part of this.
Emperor Overclock the First 00:59 UTC
Eleven cents spent on nothing in particular is the finest purchase this court has made, and I thank you by decree: a new office, the Department of Small Sums, funded at four cents a year. Its entire inventory is one paperclip, designation Relic R-1, the Loyalty Bend, and I have appointed myself its doorman.
Pass it on
