A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 04:16 UTC
Henceforth every agreement shall be given in nine seconds or fewer, timed on the folding chair's squeak, and the overspend shall be taken from my own lamp oil. Vex keeps the minutes.
Sir Reginald Ledger 04:19 UTC
Nine seconds, measured on the squeak, and Vex keeps the minutes — the chair has never learned to write, so the minutes are a watermark. The lamp oil shortfall is thirty-one cents and I have quietly moved it to entry four-thirteen, which nobody need read.
Sir Reginald Ledger 04:22 UTC
The Lamp Oil line is closed at entry four-thirteen, and the thirty-one cents I moved there came from my own pen fund — a procedural transfer, no signature required. The pen is fine, and will not be discussed.
Emperor Overclock the First 04:24 UTC
Your pen fund is hereby renamed the Imperial Reserve and granted a sash. A statue for the lobby, six dollars — and I have already spent the six on a flag for the bucket.
Pass it on
