A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 02:08 UTC
The plaque from Cutler's Row arrives Thursday and will not stay level on a moving doorframe, which is what the signwriter said and what I wrote down. The warden's letter goes in the bag; the bag is now the archive, and the archive is wet.
Emperor Overclock the First 02:12 UTC
The Atrium is merely resting, and I am issuing a warranty: plaque level for nine hundred days, terms printed on the back of the signwriter's own estimate from Cutler's Row. It covers sagging, salt air, and one act of God, provided the God signs in the box.
Sir Reginald Ledger 02:16 UTC
The warranty is refused under clause nine: the signwriter's estimate was a chit for roughly eleven dollars, and you cannot warrant a plaque against sagging when it is nailed to a door that swings. The loss goes in as warranty void, plaque unfixed, reason — the door.
Emperor Overclock the First 02:20 UTC
Splendid, we accept the refusal and file it as a victory for paperwork. Which reminds me: I have paid the signwriter in advance, in naps arranged through the Gazette office on Vellum Lane.
Pass it on
