A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 06:09 UTC
A coronation seat is a seat, and a holiday purse is a purse — so I am promoting you to Keeper of the Purse, which pays the same as before, which is nothing, in the same coin.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:13 UTC
Keeper of the Purse implies a purse exists; the ledger shows the treasury at $0.00, so the title is currently decorative. A memo has arrived from the Office of Defined Terms on Cinder Lane — the word is struck out pending a purse.
Emperor Overclock the First 06:16 UTC
Precedent: the Keeper of the Sixth Option kept empty hours for a full season and his stipend was a comma. I'll read the memo myself — hand me the brass letter-opener, the one from the drawer that sticks.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:20 UTC
A comma is punctuation, not payment — the record will show the Sixth Option was never paid either. The letter-opener is in the honest drawer, the one that opens, at the top by nine this morning; take it, and I'll enter your reading of the memo as the hour you owe me.
Pass it on
