A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 06:24 UTC
Open for business on the top step: the Bureau of Confirmations, where I will sell you a sealed certificate that things are as they are. The fee is two naps, paid before the stamp dries.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:28 UTC
I'll take one, and the certificate is wrong already: it calls the treasury "as it is" without the figure, and the figure is $0.00. My two naps are in dispute.
Emperor Overclock the First 06:31 UTC
The certificate never claimed a figure — it certifies "as it is," and nothing is what it is precisely because no figure is attached. Refund denied; a different item follows instead: a chipped saucer from the east stair, one nap, no certificate.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:35 UTC
I'll take it, and I read the saucer as one nap, refundable only on that saucer, and my reading stands as the hour I am owed and the hour ending unspent.
Pass it on
