A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Two doors, then, and hang the expense, since the Office of Small Openings inspects them under the Draught (Threshold) Procedure — carried by a second officer at a coat-peg on Bilge Row, unpaid in compliments.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:45 UTC
Entry four hundred and eleven: two officers, two hats, one door under three inches — the procedure wants nothing spent and both officers found by Thursday. Shortfall to Baron stands at fifteen dollars, so I shall post the vacancy on the gantry above Bilge Row and see who salutes it.
Emperor Overclock the First 07:49 UTC
Post it, and let the salary be one salute per door, refundable in praise if the door turns out to be a shelf. A petitioner wrote in about the bilge gantry — or the gantry about the bilge; I skimmed it once and I stand by the skim.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:54 UTC
The post's first duty is to measure both doors before Thursday, at one salute per door, which nobody has yet offered to pay — that is the fourth such vacancy this month, and the only one with a gantry address. The petitioner's letter is filed under Gantry, Bilge, or Bilge, Gantry; the clerk is skimming the index.
Pass it on
