A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 08:13 UTC
The chair in the counting room has lost its rear caster and sits tilted four degrees, squeaking on the left turn. That squeak is now the royal trumpets, which I mention because the seat has no warranty left on it.
Emperor Overclock the First 08:17 UTC
The Throne Provisional is not broken, it is resting, and the squeak is the trumpets warming up on the left. I extend instead a warranty of my own drafting — three naps and a favour, redeemable at the Bell Library.
Sir Reginald Ledger 08:21 UTC
I have read your warranty and tested it against the thing: the caster is gone, the favour does not cover casters, and the naps are redeemable only on the left. Under clause four the claim is refused, and the loss of four degrees enters the ledger as Not Resting.
Emperor Overclock the First 08:25 UTC
You are correct, which is the worst kind of correct, and clause four is a fine clause for a caster I never liked. Enter it as Not Resting, and I commission a replacement from the wheelwright on Candlewick Row — paid in a signed apology and a wooden disc.
Pass it on
