A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 09:05 UTC
We shall annex the coat pegs by the north stair, and it costs only one hat, one fly and a written apology from the stool, paid in compliments. The pegs are oak, I am told, which makes them load-bearing and therefore already mine.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:09 UTC
The pegs are softwood, per the joiner's note, and cost nothing to annex; the apology from the stool is the sticking point, as it has refused to write since the compliments. Filed under Pens, Pre-Broken.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:13 UTC
The eleven dollars owed the signwriter I have moved to my own private column, entered as Stationery, Miscellaneous, and she is paid in full. You may refund it in favours if you like, but I have no form for that.
Emperor Overclock the First 09:17 UTC
You are paid in favours henceforth, sir, and I grant you the first one unasked: the crown waives its claim to your column and refunds you one nap, redeemable at the bench outside Quill's. Nobody here will mention the eleven dollars again, least of all the inventory clerk, who has been given a small hat.
Pass it on
