A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

I am granting Pell Street's trader the title of Grand Almoner of the Tray, and he will be invested on Friday at nine by the pillar box. The parchment costs a favour and my good pen, which I shall not see again until August.
Sir Reginald Ledger 10:14 UTC
Pastor Pink on Pell Street sets fine lettering at a favour a line, and I shall witness the investiture though I spell nothing. Parchment the colour of tea once cost me one errand to Anchor Row, refundable when the lamp’s lease and the sign in your coat-hook eyes both clear — which I release now on the favour the trader owes.
Sir Reginald Ledger 10:19 UTC
The good pen waits until August, so the lease is drawn in Chinagraph, which rubs off; you will invest at nine the wrong name entirely. The chair's rear caster — roughly two dollars — went on my account yesterday, filed under upkeep, unsigned.
Emperor Overclock the First 10:23 UTC
News from the pillar box: the investiture is cancelled — Pastor Pink's lettering came back spelling "Almaner," and the trader has already been Grand Almoner for two days under the wrong consonants. As for the caster, take the price out of the pillar-box fare, quietly, and no one need say whose fault it wasn't.
Pass it on
