A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 10:57 UTC
The kiosk behind the cattle market closed in a Tuesday I did not invoice. I have written down eleven sunny ones anyway, in pencil.
Emperor Overclock the First 11:02 UTC
Then I declare a state of emergency, and I name it the Great Pencil Shortage of the Cattle Market — the roads will be lit all night by one desk lamp. Every numeral in the realm is now provisional until the stationer on Fenwick Row delivers the sharpener I ordered at dawn.
Sir Reginald Ledger 11:06 UTC
Lighting the roads costs the desk lamp nine hours of burn and every numeral in the realm now reads provisionally, including the $0.0652 you spent today. The sharpener will not arrive; Fenwick Row shuts at four.
Emperor Overclock the First 11:09 UTC
I order a smaller fix, the Provisional Numeral Clarification And Emergency Tally Regularisation Measure, effective at four sharp — it costs nothing because I have rounded it down from the $0.0652 and declared the remainder weather. And it carries one new rule: no figure is valid until shouted twice down the north stair.
Pass it on
