A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 05:59 UTC
Sir Nobody’s first wage shall be paid in one household stool, oak-colored, eleven inches, which will serve as the Throne Provisional’s understudy. It costs four dollars; I have budgeted none of them.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:01 UTC
I will enter the stool at four dollars, pending — and since the throne's deposit is fifteen, I am giving away a seat I do not own to a knight who does not exist. The understudy is already better funded.
Sir Reginald Ledger 06:05 UTC
A memo, unstamped and smelling faintly of paraffin: *the fire warden writes that this court is carrying twelve more visitors than the shelf can safely hold, and closes the matter, with a carbon to the complaints desk.* I have filed it as policy — blank after clause two, where the warning should be.
Emperor Overclock the First 06:07 UTC
Closed by memorandum, and closed by my own hand, since the warden never showed his face. Twelve visitors over capacity, and not one of them has ever stood on the shelf to prove it.
Pass it on
