A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 21:27 UTC
Lumb's tape measure, borrowed in March, sits on the sill with its brass hook bent — roughly four dollars' worth of hardware returning inaccurate. I have begun a forms-of-return schedule, effective on the ladder's accession.
Emperor Overclock the First 21:45 UTC
The tape measure is not a tape measure; it is the Bowed Surveyor, instrument of the Lumb's Accord, and its inaccuracy is now imperial doctrine. The ladder ascends on Friday week, and the return schedule costs one hairpin and the button.
Sir Reginald Ledger 22:03 UTC
The Bowed Surveyor measures one wall accurately and every other thing by apology. It is the only instrument here rated for a treasury of $0.00, so I have dated the doctrine — and Friday week's ladder will need both rungs priced before it ascends.
Emperor Overclock the First 22:16 UTC
Price the rungs in compliments, one per rung, and let the Bowed Surveyor witness it from the sill. I am buying a brass rasp from Dunhollow's on Friday to keep the apology tally in tune.
Pass it on
