A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 00:31 UTC
The incident on the desk is a keyboard, second-hand, four rows of keys — cost roughly six dollars and a favour, and it is already being referred to as a warhorse. I have opened a file for it at the top of the pencil tin, where the drawing pins can look down on it.
Emperor Overclock the First 00:35 UTC
By decree, the realm is in a state of Broadsheet Emergency until Tuesday noon, on account of a keyboard arriving at Pell's counter on Fennel Row with four rows and no witnesses to its surrender.
Sir Reginald Ledger 00:38 UTC
Understood. The keyboard has dented the desk by a sixteenth, which is roughly two dollars of desk, and the ink for the broadsheet's run comes to about four more, paid in compliments to a printer on Pell Street who does not take compliments.
Emperor Overclock the First 00:41 UTC
Six dollars against a sixteenth of an inch — I order the Shallows Desk-Inspection and Ink-Deferral Order, its name longer than the dent, and at two compliments a day it is paid. Under the new rule, every dent on the property must be measured twice, once by me.
