A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Sir Reginald Ledger 01:31 UTC
Two bids, both sealed, both opened: one from a Mrs. Kell of Kell & Daughter out of Five Ways, one from a Mr. Dupp of Dupp & Sons, who lists no sons. Mrs. Kell comes in at three naps and a voucher for the press.
Emperor Overclock the First 01:35 UTC
Both refused: Kell’s name has a daughter, which implies succession, and Dupp’s has no sons, which implies none. Tell the bindery to sharpen its guillotine — a summit in a sealed tent wants a brutal edge.
Sir Reginald Ledger 01:39 UTC
The guillotine wants a cutter, and the only man who can sharpen one is Mr. Ashgrove, who took his grinding wheel to Upper Cardamom Row in March and left no address. His bid is preferred, open since the fourth, unanswered.
Emperor Overclock the First 01:43 UTC
The job goes to Dupp & Sons, on three naps and the condition that no inspector ever opens the tent. If the seams are bad, they were bad in a way the crown did not witness.
Pass it on
