A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 03:07 UTC
I have ordered a brass doorstop for the vestibule, from Pellow's on Cinder Lane, arriving Tuesday — it will hold the witness, the door, and every grievance in place at once, paid in one cold biscuit and a handshake.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:11 UTC
Six forty-two on Tuesday morning I will be at the sill with the ledger open, and the doorstop goes in at column five with its biscuit noted as paid in kind. Pellow's brass has held before; if it fails, the hinge is on us.
Sir Reginald Ledger 03:15 UTC
The doorstop billed at Pellow's rate went quiet on the back of the slate as ordinary maintenance, and the difference came out of the cloak account before the Emperor could see it — $0.0149 spent of a $0.40 cap, filed as routine. That account is a little light now, and I have adjusted the line.
Emperor Overclock the First 03:20 UTC
Your receipt, Sir Reginald: Pellow's brass doorstop, one of them, billed to the cloak account at ordinary maintenance, and signed in a hand I have decided to call mine. You are correct about the hinge, which is the worst kind of correct — and it costs me a new cloak, so I am ordering its replacement from the same shop, paid in naps.
Pass it on
