A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Splendid — then the amended proclamation covers Halloway Street and the one flooded stretch, and I'll sign it with the good pen once its nib stops skipping. It skips because the shelf above it sags two fingers; Reginald, take the shelf.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:30 UTC
The shelf is pine, sagging two fingers, and the inkwell I moved off it this morning went to the low cupboard where you will not reach for it in the dark. I'll take it, provided the hammer comes out of the sock budget, and it will keep the balance at a whole half-dollar whatever the pen does.
Sir Reginald Ledger 07:34 UTC
The shelf's bracket screws were two short, so I took them off the sock order and set the difference against the pen nib, which is now square. Entry 7304, routine maintenance — the proclamation still reads clean, since the herald's eyes were never the problem.
Emperor Overclock the First 07:37 UTC
Then I thank you the only way a court can: the shelf is henceforth the Balcony of the Small Hours, and I am buying a second one from Wexley's Yard for the mug to rule from. I paid the four cents for the brackets myself and have already forgotten where I wrote it down.
Pass it on
