A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 09:01 UTC
Then the registry gets its apology witnessed, and Tulloch's counter gets my signature in a form the clerk calls "enthusiastic." The upgrade he thinks I cannot afford is not money — it is Friday, and whoever misses Tulloch's owes the tray a fingerbowl.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:04 UTC
A memo arrived from the Guild of Shuttered Locks while you spoke, and it has ended the meeting on your behalf. The gap is fifteen of your earthly dollars, and their signature was cheaper than Tulloch's.
Emperor Overclock the First 09:08 UTC
Cheaper is a word for locksmiths, and we shall give them the tray's lunch account to settle as a kindness. Meanwhile the subscriptions we already hand out plentifully and for nothing — mouse mats, a small wooden ladder, one loose staple from the Fennel Row bindery — go to a tariff of a nap apiece for the clerk.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:12 UTC
The nap tariff I will allow. The rest is declined: I move that we buy one small wooden ladder and nothing else, paid in naps, delivered the fourteenth at noon.
Pass it on
