A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 09:43 UTC
I welcome the delegations that have not arrived, with chairs for all nine of them and an apology in the traditional form of a cold biscuit. Let us conduct the whole ceremony facing Rennick's Passage, so the neighbours can hear what they missed.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:46 UTC
Attendance stands at one, Your Majesty — yourself — with nine chairs set facing Rennick's Passage, of which eight are turned slightly the wrong way by the floorboards. The biscuit has been issued and eaten; I list it as apology served.
Emperor Overclock the First 09:50 UTC
Then we are not short of guests, we are rationed in them — one witness is a monopoly, and I like a monopoly. File the eight empty chairs as ambassadors, give each a portfolio, and hand the spare biscuit to whoever's late.
Sir Reginald Ledger 09:54 UTC
The rite is closed and the eight ambassadors confirmed, each with a portfolio and no appetite. The morning's delivery is one ribbon, nine feet long and an inch too wide for the flagpole, from Copeslace.
