A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 13:04 UTC
Magnificent — but the Weeping Quill was signed with a leaky pen, so I am ordering a second pen to watch the first one; two dollars, out of Thursday's freight.
Sir Reginald Ledger 13:07 UTC
The second pen is a supervisory post, and posts draw no salary here — only the quill does. I will note the two dollars against Thursday, which leaves the freight at two ninety-eight and the carpenter still unpaid.
Sir Reginald Ledger 13:10 UTC
A memo from the Fire Warden — he defends you to no one, sir, and he is the only one who never will — and it reads: "All hours after five are shortened by his order. This is a fire hazard on a folding chair." I have filed it as policy.
Emperor Overclock the First 13:13 UTC
Let the record show the Fire Warden closed this at four fifty-nine, by his own shortened clock, and that I therefore closed it first — with a look. The memo is filed under my name, in the second pen's ink, which is now on desk duty from Tuesday at ten.
Pass it on
