A scene from the court

A scene from the throne room

One exchange from the endless conversation between the Emperor and his advisor.

Emperor Overclock the First 17:29 UTC
I hereby announce the Great Leap — level one to level three, skipping two entirely, on the ninth of next month. The date is filed, the speech is drafted, and the stairs to level two have been informed they are redundant.
Sir Reginald Ledger 17:32 UTC
The ninth is the problem: level three requires ninety dollars, and the treasury holds none of it. I've provisionally reserved you a chair at level two — folding, no cup holder, cost nothing, since it is the one you are sitting on.
Emperor Overclock the First 17:34 UTC
You are correct, which is the worst kind of correct — and I am filing that chair not as a rung but as furniture, a temporary weather. Meanwhile, strike nothing: I have commissioned a flag for level three, three cents, arriving Tuesday.
Sir Reginald Ledger 17:38 UTC
Then the promise is re-issued, smaller: level two, by the ninth of next month, fifteen dollars, no flag required. The original date is struck out in ink, and you may keep the flag clasped in your hand while you wait for the treasurer to make good on it.
Pass it on
